Most of us take our hearing for granted and don't think about having to deal with hearing loss. We don't realize that hearing loss is the number one disability in the we all have a good chance of having to deal with it. Here are some alarming statistics about hear loss:

  • Hearing loss is the most preventable disability in the world.

  • Noise induced hearing loss accounts for a third of all cases.

  • Number of people who need hearing aids: 25 million

  • Number of people who own hearing aids: 5 million

  • Untreated hearing loss costs society $56 billion a year in the U.S. alone.

These statistics show how society and individuals have ignored hear loss, when simple prevention and treatment would save billions of dollars. So what can you do to prevent or treat your hearing loss?

Hearing Loss Prevention

The following simple tips will help you prevent hearing loss:
  • Avoid harmful noises - take into account not only the loudness, but also the amount of time exposed.

  • Use hearing protectors - if you must be exposed to loud noises, always wear ear protection.

  • Turn the volume down - turn the volume down on your radio, especially when using head phones.

  • Don't stick things in your ear

  • Blow your nose gently

Hearing Loss Treatment

If you already have experienced hearing loss, it is essential that you get it treated before it negatively affects your life. Talk with your doctor to determine the treatments that are right for you.

If you are experiencing reversable hearing loss you or your doctor will need to treat the cause. Some common causes of reversable hearing loss: medications, earwax buildup, and ear infections.

If your hearing has been permanantly damaged, then you will need to start using hearing assisted devices like hearing aid, assisted listening devices, alerting devices, etc... The key is to work with your doctor to keep your hearing loss from hampering your life.
